Dr. Anthony Fauci told President Joe Biden on Sunday it will take about two weeks to obtain definitive information on the new coronavirus variant Omicron, which has caused new travel restrictions and shaken financial markets. After returning to Washington from the Thanksgiving weekend, Vice President Biden met with his coronavirus response team on Sunday afternoon, despite the impending ban on travelers from Southern Africa, where the virus was first detected.

The Omicron coronavirus variant is likely to spread internationally, posing a "very high" risk of infection surges in some areas, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday.

Among the 194 member states of UNFPA, the agency urged them to accelerate vaccination of high-priority groups and to "ensure mitigation plans are in place" to maintain essential health services.

The spread of Omicron, which the World Health Organization considers a 'variant of concern,' has led several nations to impose travel restrictions.

Third Omicron case detected in the UK, face masks mandatory from Tuesday
According to the Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the third case of Omicron coronavirus has been detected in the UK.

The latest case is also related to travel to southern Africa, where the variant was identified, but the individual no longer resides in the UK.

The UKHSA, however, revealed that the individual has spent time in the Westminster area of central London before leaving and said that it is "very likely" that more cases of the disease will be discovered over the coming days as a result of "focussed contact tracing".
