Willis Carrier laid the foundation for the machine when he was
looking for a solution to the problems that moisture and heat
were causing for one of his customers, the owner of a Brooklyn
print shop. Now, we know it today as an air conditioner: a
device that draws in warm air from rooms and converts it into
cold air using refrigerants.
But before that, there were many other attempts. The Chinese
and Romans already mitigated high temperatures by
incorporating water-based systems into their constructions. Scientist Michael Faraday also worked on it, introducing
ammonia as a cooling element. It progressed, but ammonia was
not highly recommended.
