Phil Collins’ debut solo single is especially famous for its drum break towards the end. He wrote the song amid the grief he felt after divorcing his first wife. Even after around 42 years, this song still sounds like a record from another world: strange and tense and compelling, and filled with moments of instrumental brilliance – not just the drum break that causes the kids to bounce in amazement – but the phasing and multitracking of individual words for emphasis, the scrape, and clang of guitars in the background. Philip was born in the town of Chiswick, England, on January 30, 1951, and is known as a singer, drummer, composer, producer, and also an actor. Phil Collins’ solo career has been as triumphant as his other musical life in Genesis, first as the band’s drummer in 1970, before switching over as singer by the mid-’70s after Peter Gabriel’s departure. Between 1984 and 1989 he led the US Billboard Top 100 chart with songs like ‘You'll Be In My Heart’, ‘Can't Stop Loving You’, ‘Everyday’, ‘True Colors’ and many more. According to Atlantic Records data from 2002, his solo career sales have reached 150 million records worldwide.
