Ayodhya Dispute
The Ayodhya land dispute has been a political, historical, and socio-religious debate in India for decades. The dispute centers on a plot of land in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, which Hindus consider to be the birthplace of the Hindu deity Ram
According to some Hindu legends, it was the site of a Hindu temple that was demolished to make way for the Babri Masjid mosque. Muslims, for their part, claim that the land was titled to them and that Mir Baqi built the mosque on it in 1528 on orders from the Mughal emperor Babur.
The alteration or destruction of the temple has been a contentious issue. According to various stories, several Muslims in 1949 witnessed the installation of a Ram idol inside a mosque. Both the Hindu and Muslim sides asserted possession of the location, which eventually resulted in a government lockdown of the region.
